Red Tape

Newly-qualified British nurses can't get jobs. Yet Britain recruits nurses from abroad. Nick Griffin, BNP leader, described this as "looting the Third World."
Much of yesterday's news concerned the case of a Filipina nurse who unfortunately died following child-birth.
Not only was she employed by the National Health Service but so was her Filipino husband. He was legally entitled to because he had a Spouse Visa. Now that his wife has died his visa is no longer valid.
There should be no such thing as a Spouse Visa. (Just a Wife Visa.)
The Minister of Health when that nurse was recruited was Patricia Hewitt.
She has described as her "most satisfying achievement" her campaign that defeated the 1979 Conservative Government's policy to end the concession whereby foreign and Commonwealth men can live and work in the UK through marriage. She was, at the time, General Secretary of the National Council for Civil Liberties (now Liberty).
The Spouse Visa enables foreign men to compete on equal terms with native British men for work and promotion.
Wives and foreign husbands are like criminals in cahoots. Except that they are not so much to blame as are the people who defeated the 1979 Conservative Government's policy. This is a self-inflicted devaluation of native British men.
It is not surprising that that Filipino wants to continue living here.
The Coroner involved supported his desire to do so. He dismissed the visa as "red tape".
